Student Housing Rules

Students registered in the dormitories must notify the Residence Halls Directorate in relation to any temporary periods that they will not be staying at the room, by completing a permission form. The Residence Halls Directorate and CIU do not accept any legal responsibility towards students who vacate the dormitories without informing accordingly.

Students should only enter their dormitories via the front entrance. Entering via the fire escape doors, balconies and windows is not appropriate due to safety reasons.

Students should stay up to date with and follow the academic and/or administrative announcements and warnings, published by the Residence Halls Directorate in writing and/or via social media.

Students have the right to change their rooms once, free of charge. Any other consecutive room changes can be done so at a cost of €100.

Students who wish to vacate their dormitories during the middle of the semester, cannot receive a refund of their fees.

In the event that students are involved in any disgraceful and criminal activities, the relevant student will be punished within the framework of the TRNC laws, with the necessary sanctions applied in accordance with the university rules, and the students’ accommodation will be terminated.

Students may only stay in the rooms they are registered to, and without informing the Residence Halls Directorate and obtaining their permission, they may not stay in another room or apartment. Students may not give their room or apartment key or card to anyone else, even for a temporary period, for security reasons.

During the weekdays (Monday-Thursday) and on Sundays, students may enter their dormitories by the latest 00.00, and by 2.00 am on Friday and Saturdays. A receptionist will help those students who will enter the dormitory outside the specified times. Living rules and/or CIU Legislation will not be applied when entering and leaving the dormitories in extraordinary circumstances.

Students may not allow any guests to stay in their rooms overnight. Those who do not comply with this rule will be charged with a one-person hotel room fee for the duration of the visitor's stay, and the university will also impose¬ a penalty on the students concerned.

Students may meet with family members, parents, friends, or anyone from outside of the campus, in the dormitory lobby area.

During the examination period, for studying purposes, students may allow visitors with the permission of the on-duty building supervisor, and within the framework of the rules listed above.

In studio-type dormitories where there are no shared kitchen facilities, food should not be cooked and flammable, and/or devices with fire should not be utilized. In the event that the prohibited devices are detected during room checks, the device will be removed from the room and stored for the student until the end of the academic year.

Once a month, routine cleaning of the dormitories is carried out by the Residence Halls Directorate. The cleaning of the room/apartment, as well as the common areas, is the responsibility of the students. In the event that the contrary is detected during the cleaning and hygiene controls, a written warning will be issued to the student. In cases of repetition, a fine will be debited to the student's account along with a written warning.

All relevant students who share a common responsibility of the common areas are jointly responsible for any damages that occur.

Any foods that are prone to spoiling and smell, should not be kept in the rooms.

Furniture that is located in the dormitory rooms and that is handed over to the student at their entrance to the room via a mutual signing, belongs only to that student in question, and should not be transferred to another room or damaged.

It is advised for students to use a laundry dryer, as it is not suitable to hang laundry on the balcony rails.

Flags, posters, and streamers may only be hung in bedrooms, and are not permitted to be hung on balconies, windows, or anywhere else on the building, in order not to discomfort others.

To ensure other students are not caused any discomfort, loud sounds and noises should not be made.

Due to conditions of hygiene and infectious diseases that can be spread by animals, it is not appropriate to raise animals in the dormitory. In the event that an animal is detected, it is the responsibility of the student to keep the animal safely away and to ensure the necessary hygiene is restored.

The heating system and electricity costs within studio dormitories are calculated on a monthly basis. Since the meter for the heating system continues to measure as long as the ventilation system is on, it is recommended to operate it only when needed. Monthly consumption fees are reflected upon the student's account and can be shared by the Residence Halls Directorate upon request.

The dormitory room beds must be used together with mattress protectors.

Students should treat all of the dormitory administrative staff with respect.

No smoking in closed areas. Additionally, alcohol use is not permitted within the campus.

Theft, the possession and use of drugs, possession of all kinds of cutting and piercing weapons, and firearms, and gambling and/or playing games for gain, or administering such games for gain, are illegal offenses. Any students found involved with criminal offenses will be punished within the framework of the TRNC laws and their residence in the dormitories will be terminated by applying the necessary sanctions in accordance with the university rules.

Where deemed necessary by the Residence Halls Directorate, building supervisors may enter the room during hours when the students are not present, for control and inspection.

Building supervisors are in the position to inform security guards and/or the police in relation to any judicial matters that may occur in the dormitory and dormitory area.

If found necessary, the Residence Halls Directorate may administer room changes.

Students should report any malfunctions they encounter in their dormitories to the relevant building supervisor. The repair costs of any user-induced malfunctions will be reflected upon the student's accounts after they are notified.

It is kindly requested that students do not to throw any substances that may clog the toilets and sinks in their rooms. If such a malfunction is detected and the congestion in general, all students staying in the relevant common facility, and if it is room-related, the student of that room will be notified, and a cleaning bill will be reflected upon their accounts.

Students who wish to obtain wireless internet access in addition to the wired internet connection available in their dormitory rooms should consult the Residence Halls Directorate to be informed of the features of the devices they will supply.

Students are obliged to comply with all of the CIU "Dormitory Living Rules" specified in the University Legislation. The university rules are valid in matters that are not mentioned here.
