“Honor means 'no' ”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilmaç wrote on the concept of “honor”, which is perceived as belonging to the traditional and patriarchal system and is often identified with Mediterranean societies, based on her observations in her work.

Indicating that the use of the concept of honor by individuals from different cultures in different countries has recently been affecting the world (Gezi, Podemos, Yellow vests, etc.), Dilmaç said: “honor lost its traditional meaning and its cultural entity; it has become a universal concept to counteract social situations created by global economic system affecting the dignity of people due to inequality, corruption and so on”.

Interviews with Turkish and French adults

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilmaç explained that she conducted a comparative study to understand the phenomenon in question and pointed out that this study covers the results of the interviews with Turkish and French young adults.

The work consists of three parts

Noting that the work consists of three parts, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilmaç said: "the first chapter covers the concept of honor in the history of France and Turkey. This section explains how honor has been affected by the political and social changes in history in both communities and how its meaning has changed”.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilmaç explained that the second part concentrates on the views of modern society about “honor” and the views of participating young people on honor, pride, dignity, integrity and by this courtesy, the role of these concepts in their daily lives is discussed.

Dilmaç pointed out that the last chapter is devoted to the capitalist system. In this study the results revealed that young adults perceive honor as a more individual value rather than a collective (family honor, the honor of homeland ...) or a culture-bound concept.

Dilmaç said, “Honor is a principle that encourages neoliberalism to resist contradictory expectations imposed on individuals. In other words, honor now means ‘no’”.
