We are having the hottest days ever

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şifa Doğan stated that the balance of the ecosystem has deteriorated due to the increase in urbanization and industrial activities and added, “this situation has caused the emergence of new types of diseases and other effects such as climate change”.

Mentioning that climate changes are felt more and more every day, Doğan said, “melting of Greenland and Antarctic glaciers, increasing of ocean waters and air temperatures, changes in precipitation amounts and drought can be considered among the most influential changes.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan also underlined that the average temperature observed in the world shows an increasing trend, and we have been experiencing the hottest days in the world since the 20th century.

“We are destructively experiencing its effects”
Noting that the seasonal shift is another finding observed in regards to climate change, Doğan continued, "For example, in the period studied from 1959 to the 2000s in the Northern Hemisphere, it was reported that the spring season came 6 days earlier and the winter season was delayed for 5 days."

It was also pointed out that unusually high temperatures and destructive rains are among the other findings observed, and reliable authorities dealing with climate change identified that such changes result from releases of human-based air pollutants which were labelled as greenhouse gases.

Explaining that the presence of greenhouse gases prevents the reflection of radiation from the Sun from the atmosphere and the Earth's surface, it was noted that these gases create a greenhouse effect by keeping the heat in their bodies.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan stated that today, efforts are made to reduce the factors that cause the release of these gases, “However, these efforts are not sufficient. Therefore, the environment we live in is changing and we are destructively experiencing its effects. ”
