Pi Day to make children love math and science
Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir, the Chairperson of the Department of Basic Education of Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Education stated that the number Pi is widely used especially in engineering and science, and noted the purpose of Pi Day celebrations has been to increase children's interest in science.
Reminding that in decimal form, the value of Pi is approximately 3.14, Özdemir stated that the 14th day of the third month corresponding to this number is for that matter celebrated as Pi day.
Özdemir said that the Pi number is not only a source of inspiration for positive sciences, but that this number also plays a leading role in the works of many artists, and that even musicians who study the numbers of Pi in a way that corresponds to a note create an incredible masterpiece of music.
Özdemir stated that we will never be able to calculate the 100 trillion digits of Pi because it is an irrational number, one that continues forever without any repeating pattern, and this raises the question whether it is in a magnificent order or it is a mere coincidence.
Özdemir also pointed out that many people organize competitions for this fascinating number, and that every year there is a competition to memorize the Pi digits and that those who want to succeed, come up with different strategies.
Stating that the invention of Pi started with the admiration for circles and numbers, Özdemir continued on to say that Pi fascinated billions of people and changed the game by glorifying mathematics.
Özdemir stated that the Pi Day celebrations are not only about mathematics or science, and "Actually, this day is also important in terms of showing what one can achieve when one is passionate about it."
