The name of Dr. Fazıl Küçük is written in the Turkish Cypriot political history as the people’s leader
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences Academic staff Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Samani, stated that Dr. Fazıl Küçük was the first leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, he was a journalist and a medical doctor with a sensitivity towards social problems starting from the British colonial administration period, and he noted that Fazıl Küçük had written his name into the Turkish Cypriot political history as the peoples leader.
Samani reminded that with the British domination of Cyprus, by protecting their own socio-economic and cultural institutions, the Turkish Cypriot Community has struggled to exist on the island, and he went on to say “within this struggle for social existence that has continued until today, by taking active roles in political life and other platforms, many Turkish Cypriots have made contributions to this struggle. When it comes to the political figures in the Turkish Cypriot community, Dr. Fazıl Küçük has been seen worthy of the leadership role”.
Noting that in the process of organizing Turkish Cypriots against the Greek Cypriot nationalist movement who aimed for Enosis, Dr. Fazıl Küçük was located on the front line, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samani went on to advise that he was also struggling for Turkey to take ownership.
Elaborating that the 1950’s was a critical period for the Cyprus problem and for the future of the Turkish Cypriots, the developments brought Dr. Fazıl Küçük's name to the international platform, with Samani adding that Dr. Fazıl Küçük signed the London Agreement, one of the founding agreements of the Republic of Cyprus, on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot community.
Reminding that Küçük was the first vice-president of the Republic of Cyprus, which was the legal basis for the political equality between the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samani also pointed out that in this historical reality confirmed by international law, was in fact the greatest power in the efforts of Turkish Cypriots in reaching a solution model based on political equality upon the island.
