“Medicine is a profession that requires long-term education, sacrifice, and effort”
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Güldal Mehmetçik, speaking within the scope of 14th March Medicine Day, stated that medicine is a profession that requires long-term education, sacrifice, and effort.
Reminding that the beginning of modern medical education and today's medicine faculties are the Tıbhâne-i Amire from the day it opened and has continuously developed since then, Mehmetçik advised that the Medical School was opened on 14th March 1827, and the first Medicine Day was celebrated by medical students on 14th March 1919, at a then occupied Istanbul.
Prof. Dr. Mehmetçik: “Medicine education is a dynamic branch of science”
Although the beginning of medical education goes back to much older times, Prof. Dr. Mehmetçik explained that its handling as a science is based on recent history, and went on to state "Like many disciplines, medical education is a dynamic science which constantly develops due to the changes and developments it experiences”.
Noting that the purpose of the CIU Faculty of Medicine is to provide quality education in line with the university’s main mission, Mehmetçik further noted, "Our aim is to train doctors who obtain the universal and ethical values of medicine, obtains knowledge and skills at the highest level, who will contribute to national and international knowledge, and who will be able to conduct scientific research".
Discussing what it takes to be a good doctor, Prof. Dr. Mehmetçik stated that good quality education is insufficient on its own, and that the individual should help everyone around them with patience, a smile and steadfastness.
Reminding that the Covid-19 pandemic had a global effect, Mehmetçik said, “During this period we realized that health is more important than anything else. During the pandemic process, I congratulate all the healthcare personnel on medicine day, who work 24/7 with all their power in order to maintain a healthy society, with the aim of offering a better quality of life to humanity, and who work with the "human first" principle, day and night".
