Math Festival at Haspolat Elementary School
Department of Classroom Teaching of Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Education organized a “Math Festival” at Haspolat Elementary School.
In the activity carried out by the Junior year students of the Department of Classroom Teaching within the scope of the Mathematics Teaching course taught by Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir, Chairperson of the Department of Basic Education, educational games were played in line with school’s the curriculum.
Pointing out that they organize the Math Festival twice a year, in fall and spring semesters, Özdemir said that this year they held the 5th Math Festival
Özdemir stated that they organized the event for a total of fifty students including the first grade students at Haspolat Primary School, and added that within the scope of the event, they designed materials bearing the safety and developmental characteristics of the children in mind..
Stating that starting from the preschool period, children must first love mathematics to show love and interest in this subject, Özdemir said, “Having fun not only helps pupils learn to respect, love, and be patient but also helps them gain the ability to cooperate."
Özdemir pointed out that the curriculum in the country is still teacher- and program-oriented and for that matter activities like these are necessary to make children love mathematics.
Emphasizing that the Math Festival was organized by the students of the Department of Classroom Teaching, Özdemir also said that teacher candidates had thus the opportunity to meet with the pupils.
Özdemir stated that as CIU Department of Basic Education, they have always attached importance to social responsibility activities, and that they will continue to organize such events in this future.
