Innovative program on renewable energy
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering Program faculty members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Keyvan Bahlouli and Assist. Prof. Dr. Neyre Tekbıyık Ersoy created and implemented the Sustainable Energy Projects Program (SCAP- Supply Chain Action Plan.)
Bahlouli stated that the said program was initiated to raise awareness of renewable/clean energy especially among CIU students, and that the program was carried out with the support of the Faculty of Engineering, the Campus Directorate as well as the Project and Technical Affairs Directorate.
Bahlouli stated that, within the scope of the project, students will generally use the waste materials found on campus and said, "Our students will be working on a voluntary basis and will use electronic or mechanical wastes." Noting that students from different disciplines can take part in the program, Bahlouli stated that this way, students can work on prototype development projects such as water heating, air heating and generating electricity from renewable sources.
Ersoy, on the other hand, stated in her statement that in the later stages of the program, the projects will be shaped in line with the availability of materials and that this will create an important momentum in developing the creativity of the students. She also said that students will have the opportunity to practice what they have learned in the lessons, and “Thanks to the SCAP Program, students working as a team will be able to produce environmentally friendly projects.”
Noting that the need for energy production made by using fossil fuels is increasing day by day, Ersoy said this situation, however, causes global warming and global warming creates an environment for extreme weather events.
Ersoy said that all these developments increase the importance of the work to be done in the field of renewable and sustainable energy in our present day. She concluded by saying, “We believe that for a sustainable future, it is necessary to train young, educated and highly motivated engineers. We will continue working on our project with the support we will get from our university.”
