Highlights on the Importance of Küçük in the Turkish Cypriot’s Struggle
Prof. Dr. Fatoş Silman, member of the Faculty of Education, Cyprus International University (CIU) pointed out the importance of Dr. Fazıl Küçük, the political leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, in the struggle of Turkish Cypriots.
She underlined that the first Vice President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr. Fazıl Küçük is one of the most important historical leaders of the struggle of Turkish Cypriots: “It led the movement to raise awareness and trust in the Turkish Cypriots about the anxiety and fear created by the ENOSIS ideal that emerged in the 1950s”.
Dr. Küçük, together with Rauf Denktaş, as the Turkish Cypriot leader, also played an important role in the signing of the founding treaties of the Republic of Cyprus in London. “Dr. Fazıl Küçük, Rauf Raif Denktaş, and Osman Örek have written their names in history in the Turkish Cypriots Struggle as three friends,” said Prof. Dr. Silman.
Küçük worked hard to obtain the sovereignty rights of Turkish Cypriots and established the People's Voice Newspaper to make the Turkish Cypriots under political pressure public.
Prof. Dr. Silman stated that Dr. Fazıl Küçük is known as a benevolent person besides his political identity as he provided free health examination services to the public in his private clinic on certain days of the week.
Silman also noted that Dr. Küçük always put social interests above his own interests and his sacrifices for the Turkish Cypriot community will never be forgotten.
