Energy efficiency reduces energy consumption
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Engineering lecturer Assist. Prof. Dr. Neyre Tekbıyık Ersoy, when speaking within the scope of “Save Energy Week”, stated that with the imolementation of energy saying policies, efficient usage of energy will increase and energy consumption will decrease; and thus the need for new investments can be minimized.
Pointing out that energy saving is generally perceived as changing the lamps in the house and turning off devices that need not be used, Ersoy said energy saving is actually much more than these.
Drawing attention to the issue of energy efficiency, Ersoy said, “Reducing unnecessary energy use provides energy savings. In other words, energy efficiency is in fact itself a source of energy."
Dr. Ersoy also stated that energy needs are divided into three groups as such: electricity, heating/cooling and transportation, adding “Electric energy needs can be significantly reduced by changes in individual preferences. For example, you can use high power electronic devices with the label Energy Star.”
Reminding that the Energy class is a form of scaling that categorizes and ranks an electronic device in terms of its energy efficiency, Ersoy said, “The old indicator chart starting with the A+++ label which is the most efficient class for electronic appliances, was followed with A++, A+, A, B, C categories and lastly the most inefficient class D. However, with the changes made to this chart a few years ago, the most productive category has been determined as Class A."
Stating that A Class is followed by B, C, D, E, F and G, Ersoy shared the information that, "You can determine your energy consumption by paying attention to the energy label of the electrical appliances you buy (especially the kWh/year label)."
Ersoy underlined that choosing LED lamps will significantly reduce lighting-related consumption and added, "since the heated air rises, good roof insulation, double-layered windows and elimination of leaks will also help reduce heating/cooling expenses."
Ersoy suggested not to drive when the destination is within a walking distance, and also said that complying with speed limits would reduce both energy consumption and individual expenses.
Reminding that the majority of vehicles in the country use fossil fuels (gasoline/diesel, etc.), Ersoy said, "Since these fuels are imported, choosing public transportation instead of personal vehicles and adopting bicycles as a means of transportation will significantly reduce both consumption and costs."
For this reason, Ersoy stated that expanding the public transportation network in the country should be seriously considered and said, "As in many European countries, bicycle lanes also need to be increased."
