During the pandemic period, physical activity is important for health
Cyprus International University, School of Physical Education and Sports Director Prof. Dr. Ali Emre Erol stated that within the scope of the Covid-19 outbreak measures, sports halls, parks, pools, and stadiums were closed and thus, many people were not able to perform sporting activities, with this situation leading to a loss of physical fitness.
Emphasizing the fact that many people were less physically active during this process, Erol went on to remind, “However, we spent longer durations in front of a screen, slept irregularly and adopted bad eating habits. Thus, the increase in weight gain”.
Drawing attention to the data provided by the World Health Organization emphasizing the importance of performing periodic weekly physical activity, with either 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of high intensity, Prof. Dr. Erol stated that the said activity will be very beneficial, especially in relieving anxiety, notions of crisis and fear.
Everyone can exercise at home, without sufficient space and equipment.
Drawing attention to the fact that it is possible for everyone to exercise at home without any equipment or sufficient space, Erol provided information in relation to the options of being more physically and mentally active during the day, for individuals who are inactive within their home life.
Elaborating that activities such as stretching and breathing exercises, dancing with music, doing housework and climbing stairs can be performed, Prof. Dr. Erol also stated, “additionally, for those who have access to the internet, there is a plethora of free online resources in relation to remaining active during the pandemic, tailored for individuals and groups with differing characteristics”.
Underlining that many of the online trainings are free, Erol continued, “training, stretching, meditation, yoga and dance classes for the whole family, and physical fitness games that appeal to people of all ages, etc. can be benefited from”.
Erol advised that another important aspect in the maintenance of physical fitness is strength training, which is made possible with one’s own body weight, helping to preserve muscle strength, and he added that this is especially important for elderly people and people with physical disabilities.
