CIU PCGC organizes event that will assist with the adaptation process of the new students to university life
Cyprus International University (CIU) Psychological Counseling and Guidance Center (PCGC) organized an event with the aim to assist in finding solutions to harmonizing problems students may face within their new university life and to help them adapt more easily to their life of education.
Speaking at the event, PCGC President Assist. Prof. Dr. Eliz Volkan reminded that university life is different from other forms of lifestyles, and stated that the first months for newly registered students will not only develop and educate them but at the same time may bring with it some difficulties.
Explaining that the adaptation process may especially be more difficult for students deriving from other countries, Assist. Prof. Dr. Volkan advised that students experiencing these difficulties are not on their own, and that other students may be experiencing the same difficulties, and that as PCGC, they can provide support in such situations.
Stating that at first, it is very natural to experience anxiety on this subject, Volkan went on to say, “In such difficult situations, we should measure how sufficient our own resources are and request support when we feel it isn’t enough. This can only happen with awareness”.
Expressing that as PCGC they give great importance to the student’s psychological wellbeing, Volkan continued, “We are here to support you in facing a number of issues you may struggle with”.
Also speaking at the event, Expert Psychologist Çise Haşimoğulları reminded that there is a lot of academic responsibility in higher education, and elaborated, “There is a lot of homework, projects that need to be prepared, and examinations. The studying skills you develop on this subject and staying loyal to the programs you have without delaying them will help you”.
Advising that as well as academic responsibilities there are also social responsibilities, Haşimoğulları went on to state, “Due to you having responsibilities such as managing your finances, self-care activities, and living with someone in harmony, it is important to manage your time well”.
Stating that you may have negative experiences such as worry, heart palpitations, dizziness, insomnia, and unhappiness, Haşimoğulları continued, “It shouldn’t be forgotten that these symptoms can affect the process. Awareness is an important step”.
In the speech made by Expert Psychologist Huriye Koruşan during the event, she stated that adapting to this new process takes time, and advised individuals to do calming activities in difficult situations. Reminding the students that they are now independent individuals, Koruşan added, “Being now aware that you have to do certain things on your own, you shouldn’t be scared from trying them”.
Pointing to the importance of creating a program for their academic and social lives, Koruşan concluded, “Do not neglect to have a healthy diet, sleep well, and attend your classes regularly. Maintain the balance between your classes and your social life. Look for people on the campus who have similar hobbies to you”.
