CIU hosted Martin Curtis from Oxford University
A seminar on ‘Use of Course Books in Speaking Activities’ was held by the School of Foreign Languages, Cyprus International University (CIU).
During the seminar held at the CIU Çevik Uraz Center Conference Hall, the teacher trainer from Oxford University stated that getting students to talk in the English classroom can be a challenge for many teachers. With its unique motivating texts, topics and tasks, English File course book has given language learners the confidence to communicate in English.
Using the expression “an effective lesson can be conducted by using speaking, listening, reading and writing skills”, Martin Curtis specified that the lesson can be taught in an effective way by using all four language skills in the classroom with the help of the English File course book.
Curtis did a practice activity by relating a grammar activity with a speaking activity in the book. He also gave information about how to reinforce listening and pronunciation activities with speaking and writing activities.
The importance of students’ communication in the classroom, practical ideas targeting to increase students speaking desires and how to enable them to speak comfortably was also highlighted.
Providing information about the importance of out-of-class studies in students' success, books and brochures were given to students who were successful in the competition held at the end of the event.
At the end of the seminar to which undergraduate, graduate and doctorate students of the Department of English Language Teaching showed great interest in addition to the academics, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Yavuz, Director of the School of Foreign Languages thanked Martin Curtis for his contributions. The event ended with a group photo shooting.
